Metal Cutting, Fourth Edition
Authors: Paul K. Wright Ph.D. Industrial Metallurgy. E M Trent Ph. D. D. Met. in Metallurgy at Sheffield University.. Kindle Edition, 446 pagesPublisher: Butterworth-Heinemann Publication Date: 1976-11-30 Edition: 4 Reviews :

During the last six years there has been development in both the practice and the theory of machining and this edition is extended to refer to those changes which are significant for the immediate future. High speed steel and cemented carbide continue as the tool materials for the bulk of industrial metal cutting operations. Developments of these tools are reported in Chapters 6 and 7, and relate mostly to PVD and CVD wear resistant coatings. Progress in ceramic tools followed the successes of sialon tools which stimulated experiments in "alloying" alumina to increase toughness. This is considered in Chapter 8. Alumina-based tools containing zirconia or silicon carbide "whiskers" have found successful niches in particular operations on specific work materials where greatly increased metal removal rates have been demonstrated. It seems unlikely that ceramics will challenge cemented carbides for general machining in the near future. Ultra-hard polycrystalline diamond and cubic boron nitride have consolidated their positions and extended their range of application for cutting very hard and abrasive materials. In chapter 9 the improvement in machinability of steel achieved by commercial introduction of special deoxidation treatment in steel making is discussed. Calcium deoxidation modifies the non-metallic inclusions, the action of which at the tool/work interface can greatly increase tool life and reduce machining costs without damage to material properties. Advances in understanding of the metal cutting process are dealt with in Chapter 5 in relation to the generation of heat and temperature distribution at the tool work interface. In chapter 9 the results of investigations carried out by Dr M.L.H.Wise and co-workers at Birmingham University into the behaviour of a range of copper alloys in machining are discussed. These offer a contribution to understanding of the influence of alloying of the work material on the machinability of metallic materials....

Modeling and Simulation of Mineral Processing Systems (With CD-ROM)
Authors: R. Peter King. Hardcover, 492 pagesPublisher: Butterworth-Heinemann Publication Date: 2001-11-15 Edition: 1st Reviews :

Dr. R. Peter King covers the field of quantitative modeling of mineral processing equipment and the use of these models to simulate the actual behavior of ore dressing and coal washing as they are configured to work in industrial practice. The material is presented in a pedagogical style that is particularly suitable for readers who wish to learn the wide variety of modeling methods that have evolved in this field. The models vary widely from one unit type to another. As a result each model is described in some detail. Wherever possible model structure is related to the underlying physical processes that govern the behaviour of particulate material in the processing equipment. Predictive models are emphasised throughout so that, when combined, they can be used to simulate the operation of complex mineral processing flowsheets. The development of successful simulation techniques is a major objective of the work that is covered in the text. * Covers all aspects of modeling and simulation * Provides all necessary tools to put teh theory into practice * Free CD ROM included...

New Perspectives in Magnetism of Metals
Authors: Duk Joo Kim. Hardcover, 474 pagesPublisher: Springer Publication Date: 1999-08-01 Edition: 1 Reviews :

The fundamental physics of metallic magnetism is not yet satisfactorily understood and continues to be interesting. For instance, magnetism is anticipated to play a principal role in producing high Tc superconductivity of oxides. This book has two major objectives. First, it intends to provide an introduction to magnetism of metals in a broad sense. Besides pursuing the mechanism of metallic magnetism itself, it attempts to find and actively analyze magnetic causes hidden hitherto unnoticed behind various physical phenomena. The author's goal is to expose the fundamental role played by phonons in the mechanism of metallic magnetism. He demonstrates how such a view also helps to elucidate a broad spectrum of other observations. The second objective is to concisely introduce the standard many-body points of view and techniques necessary in studying solid physics in general. ...

Cast Iron (Shire Library)
Authors: Jacqueline Fearn. Paperback, 32 pagesPublisher: Shire Publication Date: 2008-03-04 Edition: 2nd Reviews :

Cast iron has made a tentative comeback. Street improvement schemes often include Victorian-style litter bins, bollards and street signs which are, or look like, cast iron and numerous other items such as garden furniture and door porters are available. By the second half of the nineteenth century cast iron was used for so many purposes that seem to us inapporpriate and bizarre that it is hardly surprising that people turned with relief to lighter, more sophisticated metals and man-made materials when they became available. It had been used everywhere: in constructing and embellishing buildings, in very room of the house, in the garden, in and under the streets, in offices and factories, on farms, in bridges and even for toys and jewellery. It was robust and solid but was at the same time capable of being moulded into intricate shapes and fine tracery; it was cheap but would last forever. This book looks at the history of the material that made the Industrial Revolution possible and some of the products we appreciate today not only for the imagination and craftsmanship with which they were produced but also because they reflect the style, vigour and confidence of the era....

Physics of Ferroelectrics: A Modern Perspective (Topics in Applied Physics)
Authors: Karin M. Rabe. Hardcover, 390 pagesPublisher: Springer Publication Date: 2007-09-10 Edition: 1 Reviews :
During the past two decades, revolutionary breakthroughs have occurred in the understanding of ferroelectric materials, both from the perspective of theory and experiment. First principles approaches, including the Berry phase formulation of ferroelectricity, now allow accurate, quantitative predictions of material properties, and single crystalline thin films are now available for fundamental studies of these materials. In addition, the need for high dielectric constant insulators and nonvolatile memories in semiconductor applications has motivated a renaissance in the investigation of these materials. This book addresses the paradigmatic shifts in understanding brought about by these breakthroughs, including the consideration of novel fabrication methods of single crystalline ferroelectric thin films and nanoscale applications of these materials, and new theoretical methods such as the effective Hamiltonian approach and density functional theory. A book for practicing scientists as well as graduate students. ...
